What Is Dustless Blasting?

Wet abrasive blasting — the same cutting power, with water in the stream so the mess falls at your feet and the surface stays cool.

The short answer

Dustless blasting is abrasive blasting with water injected into the media stream. The abrasive still cuts coating, rust and contamination off the surface, but the fines are weighed down and drop to the ground rather than forming a plume, and the water carries away the heat that makes thin panel warp.

How it works

Water meets the abrasive at the nozzle. Each particle is now carrying water as it hits, so it still cuts, but the fine dust created on impact is wetted and falls instead of drifting. Spent abrasive, coating and water end up in a manageable pile on your tarp rather than across the yard.

The second effect matters just as much: the surface stays cool. Heat is what expands a panel locally and buckles it as it cools, and it is the reason dry blasting has a reputation for oil-canning thin steel.

Why the water changes the job

No plume means work can happen where dry blasting cannot: occupied houses, shop fronts, boatyards with vessels either side, plants where other trades keep working, suburban streets with cars in driveways. Nobody has to be moved out.

It also changes the clean-up. Wet media is swept, not chased. On enclosed sites we contain, collect and remove it entirely.

What dustless blasting strips

Paint, two-pack, primer, powder coat, filler, anti-foul, underseal, adhesive, sealer, render, lime wash, carbon, soot, graffiti, line marking, marine growth and rust. On timber it lifts coating and weathered grey without shredding the grain.

On masonry and heritage substrates the pressure comes right down and we test a hidden section first, because the risk with soft brick and limestone is eroding the face rather than failing to strip it.

Flash rust, and the coating window

Bare steel and water do what you would expect: a light orange bloom appears within hours in Perth conditions. That is flash rust, and it is expected rather than a fault — it is a surface film, not new corrosion into the section.

We rinse and apply an inhibitor at handover, which holds the surface long enough for a painter to start the next morning. If your coating is booked, tell us the date and we sequence the blast to suit. Flash rust, explained covers it in full.

When dry blasting is the better answer

Dustless is not the answer to everything. Heavy mill scale, thick industrial coatings, tank interiors and coating systems that will not tolerate moisture are all better served dry, contained and extracted. We carry both setups for exactly that reason — the comparison is here.

Dustless blasting — your questions answered

Is dustless blasting really dust free?

It is not literally zero, but there is no airborne plume. The water weighs the fines down so they fall to the ground at the work face, which is what makes it usable on occupied sites and in boatyards where dry blasting is not.

Will dustless blasting warp thin panel?

No. The water carries the heat away as the abrasive works, and heat is what causes panels to oil-can. We also drop the pressure and keep the nozzle moving on panel work rather than dwelling in one spot.

Does the water cause rust?

It causes flash rust — a light surface bloom on bare steel, not corrosion into the section. We rinse and apply an inhibitor at handover, which holds the surface overnight so your painter can start the next morning.

Can dustless blasting be used on brick and timber?

Yes, at much lower pressure and with a softer media. We test on a hidden section first and get your sign-off on the finish before running a whole elevation, because soft brick and limestone can be eroded if the setting is wrong.

Do you need my water and power?

No. The rig carries its own water, abrasive, compressed air and containment, so we can work on a driveway, farm hardstand or live site without drawing on your services.
