Soda Blasting vs Sandblasting
One fractures the coating off, the other cuts it off. That single difference decides which substrates each one can safely touch.
The short answer
Soda blasting lifts coatings without cutting the substrate, so it suits alloy, gelcoat, chrome, timber and thin sheet. Sandblasting cuts, so it removes heavy rust and mill scale and leaves the anchor profile protective coatings need. Choose soda to protect a surface; choose sandblasting to prepare one.
The mechanical difference
Sodium bicarbonate crystals are soft and friable. They shatter on impact and the energy release breaks the bond between coating and substrate. Garnet and similar abrasives are hard and angular — they cut, removing coating and a controlled amount of substrate with it.
So the two processes are not really competitors. One is a stripper, the other is a surface-preparation tool that also strips.
What that means for your coating
If your next step is a high-build epoxy, a marine system or anything with a profile written into the datasheet, sandblasting is the only one of the two that gets you there. Soda leaves the surface clean and smooth, and smooth is what coatings peel off.
If your next step is polishing, clear coating, oiling timber or simply reassembling the part, soda is the safer choice because there is no profile to remove afterwards.


Risk to the substrate
Sandblasting can damage what it hits if pressure and media are wrong for the substrate: warped panel, eroded brick face, bruised gelcoat, chrome cut through. Soda essentially cannot, which is why restorers reach for it on irreplaceable parts.
On thin steel there is a middle path worth knowing about: wet abrasive blasting keeps the panel cool while still cutting, so you get profile without distortion.

Which is cheaper, soda or sandblasting?
Per hour they are comparable, but soda is slower on heavy coatings so a badly matched job costs more. The cost question is really a suitability question — the right process first time is always the cheaper one.
Can you use both on the same job?
Often, yes. Soda on the alloy, chrome and gelcoat, garnet on the steel that needs a profile. It is one rig and one visit.
Will sandblasting ruin aluminium?
It can, at the wrong pressure and grade — alloy is soft and thin panels distort. Where a profile is genuinely needed on alloy we use a fine media wet, at low pressure; where it is not, we use soda.
Does soda blasting leave a surface ready to paint?
Clean, yes; profiled, no. After a rinse it will take a coating that does not require an anchor profile. Systems that specify profile need a garnet pass first.
