Metal Restoration and Blasting Perth
Gates, balustrades, wheels, trailers and machinery brought back to clean metal, ready for powder coat or paint.
What comes off
Powder coaters and painters will tell you the finish is only as good as the prep. We strip old coating, rust and scale from wrought iron, fabricated steel, alloy and cast, and leave a keyed surface with no chemical residue.
Small runs and one-off pieces can come to us; balustrade runs, gates and plant are done on site. Where a powder coater is booked, we time the blast so the metal goes straight from us into their oven.

In short
Yes — we strip rust, paint, powder coat and scale from gates, balustrade, trailers, ute trays, machinery and fabricated steel. The result is a clean, keyed surface ready for primer, powder coat or two-pack. Done at your property, your workshop or on site — the rig carries its own compressor, water and abrasive.
Preparation is what makes a coating last
Most coating failures are preparation failures. Paint applied over rust, mill scale or an old coating is bonded to that layer, not to the steel, and it lifts as soon as the layer beneath it moves. Powder coaters and painters will tell you the same thing: the finish is only ever as good as what it went onto.
Blasting removes everything down to clean steel and leaves an anchor profile — a microscopic texture the new coating keys into mechanically. That is why a blasted-and-coated gate lasts years longer than a wire-brushed one, on the same paint.
What we handle
Gates, fencing and balustrade. Including ornate ironwork, where the geometry rather than the area drives the time.
Trailers, ute trays and toolboxes. A steady part of the work. Blasted and primed, ready for topcoat or bed liner.
Machinery and earthmoving attachments. Buckets, rippers, blades and undercarriage, usually carrying a mix of scale, paint and grease. Heavy mill scale is often blasted dry — it cuts faster.
Fabricated and structural steel. New fabrication going straight to coating, or existing steel being recoated to a specification.
Galvanised and stainless. Both need care. Blasting galvanised steel removes the zinc, which is usually not what you want; stainless must never see a ferrous abrasive or it will rust. Tell us the material and we will match the media — see choosing blasting media.
Coat it inside the window
Bare steel flash rusts within hours. We apply an inhibitor as standard, which typically buys two to three days, but the primer still has to follow — see flash rust, explained.
Coatings and passes
| Coating | Typically | Passes |
|---|---|---|
| Powder coat | Aged powder, chipped finish | 1–2 |
| Enamel and rust paint | Hammertone, cold galv | 1 |
| Rust and scale | Surface to moderate pitting | 2 |
| Grease and scale | Plant, trailers, floats | 2–3 |
Pass counts are for planning. Tim confirms on a site look, which is free inside the Perth metro area.
How the job runs
| Stage | What happens | Typical hrs |
|---|---|---|
| Site look | Access, water, waste and containment checked | 0.5 |
| Mask and set up | Glass, fittings and adjacent surfaces protected | 1 |
| Blast | Wet media at 6–9 bar, passes to spec | 4–8 |
| Wash and inspect | Rinse, flash-rust inhibitor, handover photos | 1 |
Bare steel wants a coat within 4–6 hours in Perth humidity. We can hold the job with an inhibitor if your painter is booked for the next morning.

Common questions
Metal restoration — your questions answered
Can you blast a balustrade run in place?
Yes. Balustrades, gates, fences and stair rails are usually done on site with containment on the surrounding surfaces. Where a piece can be removed, taking it off is often faster and cheaper.
Is the surface ready for powder coating?
Yes, provided it goes in reasonably quickly. We leave a clean, keyed surface with no chemical residue. Talk to your coater about their window, and we will time the blast so the metal is not sitting bare over a weekend.
Do you do small items?
Yes. Wheels, brackets, furniture frames and one-off pieces can be brought to us and are usually turned around the same week. Send a photo for a price.
