What does abrasive blasting cost in WA?
Nobody publishes blasting prices because every job is different. That is true, and it is also a convenient way to avoid the question. Here is what actually drives the number, with real ranges.
Read this first
Blasting is priced on time, not area. A small heavily corroded item with awkward access can cost more than a large clean one. The seven things that move the price are coating type and thickness, substrate condition, total area, access, containment requirements, travel distance and waste disposal. Ranges below are indicative for WA and exclude GST.
How blasting is actually priced
Almost every blasting quote is a time estimate wearing a square-metre rate. The contractor works out how long the job will take, adds consumables, travel, disposal and margin, then divides by the area so it looks like a rate.
This matters because it explains quotes that seem inconsistent. Two brick walls of identical size can differ by a factor of three: one has a single coat of modern acrylic, the other has forty years of layered enamel over lime render and needs a test patch, reduced pressure and twice the passes.
It also explains the minimum charge. Getting the rig to your site, setting up, containing, blasting, rinsing and packing down has a fixed cost of a few hours regardless of whether you have one gate or ten.
The seven price drivers
1. What is on the surface
Single-coat acrylic comes off fast. Two-pack epoxy, powder coat, anti-foul and forty-year-old enamel do not. Coating thickness and hardness are the biggest single variable, and they are also the one people most often understate when describing a job.
2. Condition of the substrate
Heavy pitting means the media has to reach into every pit. Rust scale needs a coarser media and more passes. A surface that is simply painted is quicker than one that is painted and corroded.
3. Total area, and its shape
Large flat areas are efficient. The same area broken into balustrade spindles, lattice, engine bays or truss work takes several times as long — you are working around geometry, not across a surface.
4. Access
Ground level with the truck parked alongside is the cheapest scenario. Costs climb with distance from the rig, stairs, upper storeys, confined spaces, and anything needing scaffold or an elevated work platform. A boat on a hardstand is straightforward; the same hull in the water is not.
5. Containment and masking
Dustless blasting reduces this dramatically, which is much of its value. But adjacent glazing, a neighbour's car, a garden bed, a swimming pool or a live production line all add masking time. Full enclosure on a regulated removal is a substantial line item in its own right.
6. Travel
Perth metro is generally within the standard rate. Rockingham, Mandurah and the Peel region are close enough to absorb. Bunbury, the South West and Kalgoorlie carry a travel component, and for regional work it is nearly always cheaper to batch several items into one trip.
7. Waste disposal
Inert spent media is cheap to dispose of. Media carrying lead paint, chromates or anti-foul biocides is regulated waste requiring containment, testing and a licensed facility. On an old boat or a pre-1970s building, this can be a significant part of the quote — and a contractor who has not allowed for it will find it later.

These are honest ballparks for Western Australia, excluding GST, assuming reasonable access and no regulated waste. Your quote will differ; this is for orientation, not a price list.

Why the cheap quote is cheap
Sometimes it is genuinely a leaner operator with lower overheads, and that is fine. Often it is one of these:
- No allowance for waste disposal. It appears as a variation when the media turns out to be carrying lead.
- A lower cleanliness grade than you assumed. Brush-off blast quoted where the coating needs Sa 2½.
- No containment. Cheap until the neighbour's car needs a respray.
- No insurance. Ask for a certificate of currency. A real contractor produces one within the hour.
- Estimated, not quoted. Nobody looked at the job. The number will move.
Compare quotes on what is included, not on the headline figure. If one is dramatically lower, something in the scope is different.
How to bring the price down
- Batch the work. Four items in one visit is far cheaper than four callouts. This matters most for regional jobs.
- Bring it to us where practical. Small items blasted in the yard avoid mobile setup entirely.
- Clear the area yourself. Every minute the crew spends moving your things is charged. See preparing your site.
- Be honest about the coating. Understating it does not save money, it just moves the cost into a variation.
- Ask whether you need the grade you specified. Sa 3 costs substantially more than Sa 2½ and is rarely necessary outside immersion service.
- Be flexible on timing. Fitting into a gap between booked jobs is worth a discount, particularly regionally.
Getting a quote that holds
Send photographs — several, from different angles, including the worst area. Say what the coating is if you know, give the rough dimensions, name the suburb, and describe the access. Tell us what happens to it afterwards, because the coating specification changes the preparation.
With that, we can usually give a firm number without attending. Without it, you get an estimate that moves on the day, which serves nobody.

How much does dustless blasting cost per square metre in WA?
For general work, roughly $35 to $140 per square metre excluding GST, depending on the coating, the substrate and the access. Structural steel sits at the lower end, heritage brickwork with layered enamel at the upper. Small items are priced per job rather than per square metre because setup dominates.
Is dustless blasting more expensive than sandblasting?
Slightly higher per hour, usually lower per completed job. The saving comes from reduced masking, no site shutdown, no dust remediation and often not having to transport the item off site. Where an existing blast booth is available, dry blasting is cheaper both ways.
Is there a minimum charge?
Yes. A mobile callout in the Perth metro area typically carries a minimum equivalent to around half a day, because setup, containment, rinse and pack-down take a fixed amount of time regardless of job size. Batching several items into one visit is the way around it.
Do you charge extra to travel to Bunbury or Kalgoorlie?
Regional work carries a travel component, yes. It is usually far more economical to batch multiple items into a single trip, and we will often coordinate several jobs in the same town to spread that cost across them.
Does the price include painting?
No. Unless the quote says otherwise, our price covers surface preparation only — masking, blasting to the agreed standard, rinse, inhibitor where applicable, and removal of spent media. Coating is quoted separately or handled by your painter.
Why do quotes for the same job vary so much?
Almost always scope, not rate. Different cleanliness grades, different containment allowances, whether waste disposal is included, and whether the contractor actually looked at the job. Compare the inclusions line by line before comparing the totals.
