What is dustless blasting?
It is abrasive blasting with water introduced at the nozzle. The media hits just as hard, but the dust that would normally cross your boundary fence gets too heavy to float and lands at your feet instead.
In one paragraph
Dustless blasting — also called wet abrasive blasting or vapour blasting — mixes water with recycled glass or garnet media inside the blast stream. The water adds mass to the fines so they fall within a few metres instead of becoming airborne, cutting visible dust by roughly 90%. It also cools the surface, so thin panel does not warp. The trade-off is that the steel comes out wet, which starts a flash-rust clock.

How it actually works
A conventional sandblaster fires dry abrasive at a surface using compressed air. Dustless blasting does the same thing, with one change: water is introduced into the media stream, either in the pot itself or at the nozzle.
The rig is four things working together. A diesel compressor supplies the air — typically 185 to 400 cfm depending on the nozzle. A pressure pot holds the abrasive, usually recycled crushed glass. A water tank feeds a metered flow into the stream. And a hose runs to a nozzle where the operator controls everything through a deadman handle that shuts the whole lot off the moment it is released.
The mix leaving the nozzle is mostly air and abrasive with a comparatively small amount of water — enough to wet the media, not enough to hose the surface. At the wall, the abrasive does exactly what it does dry: it impacts, fractures the coating, and drives it off the substrate.
What the water is doing
Three things, and only one of them is obvious.
It weighs down the fines. The dust that hangs in the air after dry blasting is not the abrasive — it is the pulverised coating and the shattered media, particles small enough that air resistance beats gravity. Wet them and they gain enough mass to fall. In practice you get a fall-out radius of a few metres instead of a plume that crosses the street.
It cools the surface. Dry blasting puts heat into thin panel. On a car door or a boat hull, that heat is what causes oil-canning — the panel distorts and never quite sits flat again. Water carries the heat away, which is the single biggest reason automotive and marine work goes wet.
It lubricates the impact. Wet media fractures slightly differently and tends to be gentler on softer substrates. On brick, render, limestone and timber, that means you can strip paint without eating the face off the material underneath.
What it strips
Anything a dry blaster removes, dustless removes — the process is not weaker. On a typical WA job that means two-pack and enamel paint, anti-foul, epoxy and powder coat, mill scale and rust, sealers and stains from timber, road marking thermoplastic, graffiti, mould and carbon build-up, and the layered mystery coatings you find on a fifty-year-old gate.
Pressure and media grade change with the substrate. The same rig runs at 100+ psi on structural steel and drops to a fraction of that for heritage brickwork.
What it can be used on
Steel, aluminium, cast iron, stainless, brick, limestone, concrete, render, hardwood timber, fibreglass and stone all take dustless blasting when the pressure and media are matched to them. Our service pages break down the approach for each.
What we will not blast: badly perforated panel that will simply open up, delaminating render, friable heritage masonry that is already failing, and anything suspected of containing asbestos or lead paint without a licensed removalist involved.
Where it beats dry sandblasting
- Occupied and residential sites. Neighbours, cars and washing lines stay clean. You are not shutting down a street.
- Anywhere other trades are working. A dry blast usually means clearing the area. A wet blast often does not.
- Thin panel and alloy. No heat, no warping.
- Masonry and timber. Lower pressure with water is far more forgiving than dry abrasive at the same removal rate.
- Silica exposure. Suppressing dust at the source materially reduces the respirable crystalline silica risk to the operator and everyone nearby — the reason Safe Work Australia's tightened silica rules pushed a lot of WA operators toward wet processes.
- Clean-up. Spent media stays in a wet slurry you can sweep or vacuum, rather than a dust that settles over everything within fifty metres for a week.
Where it does not
We run both processes, so this is not a sales pitch for one of them. Dry blasting wins when:
- The steel must stay dry. Inorganic zinc primers and some tank-lining systems will not tolerate a damp substrate. Dry blast, coat, done.
- There is heavy mill scale over a large area. Dry cuts faster on tightly bonded scale.
- Freezing or near-freezing conditions. Rare in Perth, relevant in the Goldfields overnight.
- Water cannot be contained. Some interiors, some elevated work, some environmentally sensitive sites make a slurry harder to deal with than dust.

What a job looks like
- Walk the site. Confirm the substrate, check for asbestos or lead risk, find the water and the parking, agree the containment.
- Mask. Adjacent surfaces, glazing, seals, anything that must not be touched. Far less masking than a dry job needs.
- Test patch. A small area at the intended pressure to confirm the media and settings suit the substrate. On heritage or unusual materials this is not optional.
- Blast. Working in overlapping passes, usually top down.
- Rinse and inhibit. The surface is washed down to remove residual media and salts. On steel, a rust inhibitor goes on at this point.
- Clean up. Spent media is collected and removed from site.
Most domestic jobs — a car body, a boat hull, a brick wall — are a single day.
What happens to the spent media
Recycled crushed glass is inert and non-toxic; it is made from bottle glass. What makes the waste stream hazardous is not the abrasive, it is what came off the wall. Old paint can contain lead, chromates or anti-foul biocides.
We collect spent media on every job and dispose of it according to what it contains. On known lead or anti-foul work that means full containment and a licensed waste facility. On a clean job it is inert fill. Either way it does not stay in your yard or wash into a stormwater drain.
Is it worth the money?
Per square metre, dustless blasting usually sits slightly above dry blasting on the hourly rate and well below it on the total. The saving is in everything around the blasting: less masking, less containment, no site shutdown, no dust remediation, no angry neighbour, and often no need to move the item off site at all.

Dustless blasting, answered
Is dustless blasting really dust free?
No, and anyone who says it is is overselling. It suppresses roughly 90% of the airborne dust a dry blast produces. You still see a light haze at the nozzle and there is still a fall-out zone of a few metres. What you do not get is a plume drifting across the neighbourhood.
Will it damage my brickwork or timber?
Not when the pressure and media are matched to the substrate. On heritage brick and softwood we run very low pressure with a fine media and always do a test patch first. Dustless is gentler than dry blasting at the same removal rate, which is exactly why it suits masonry and timber.
How much water does it use?
Far less than people expect — typically 20 to 60 litres an hour depending on the nozzle and settings. A domestic job usually runs off the tank on the truck. We do not need to connect to your supply.
Will the steel rust afterwards?
Bare steel that has been wet blasted will develop light flash rust within hours unless it is treated. We apply a rust inhibitor as standard, which extends the window to a few days. See our guide to flash rust for the detail.
Can you blast on site or does it have to come to you?
On site. The rig carries its own compressor, water and media, so we work in driveways, hardstands, farms, refineries and carparks across Perth and regional WA without hooking into anything of yours.
Does it remove rust as well as paint?
Yes. Rust, mill scale and paint all come off in the same pass. On heavily corroded steel we may run a coarser media or a second pass, but it is one process, not two.
